A Letter to Prom Askers

Dear High School Prom askers,

I am writing this open letter to you all to get a point across. With prom just around the corner, “promposals” are coming out of the wood work and taking over students lives. My advice to all of those who intend on asking their significant other (or friend) to prom is as follows…

1.) Don’t wait until the last minute

There are some things that you shouldn’t do when asking someone to prom and this is one of them. Making your possible date wait until the last minute you will be asking them can say a lot about you. It makes your date feel inadequate and insecure, I would know. I’ve been dating my boyfriend for over a year and a half now and he has made me wait on being asked to a dance a handful of times. I was asked the week of junior and senior Homecoming and also senior year Homecoming. The feeling of waiting in anticipation makes your date feel like you are not interested or don’t want to attend the dance with you. Ask your date soon, this will make you and your date feel a lot happier and prepared to take on the dance.

2.) Make your date feel special

Even if you are in a relationship, making your date feel special is what makes prom great. Prom is a significant dance and a pretty big deal for most people and making your date feel special is important. You don’t have to do anything major, but giving your date some flowers or their favorite kind of food can be a sweet gesture.

3.) Have fun with it all

Prom doesn’t have to be a serious event, it’s important to have fun and asking your date can be one of the best parts! Whether it’s surprising your date or just asking with a poster, make it fun and make sure you both enjoy it.

Prom is one of the best memories some people can have in High School, so take advantage of it all while you can and have fun because next thing you know we will all be graduating!

Sincerely,

Anna Grace Betts
