Page Basketball Encourages Learning Next Door

Since early in the school year, the men’s varsity basketball team has gone on Wednesday mornings, before school, to Cone elementary. There, the team reads and hangs out with the students. Junior guard, Sam Floyd says, “The kids love us, they get really excited when we come and it’s a good feeling to see their smiles.” Sophomore player Nate Duggins believes the experience has brought the team closer, as a type of bonding experience, which, he believes, will increase the connection on the court. Along with the added bonding, the players enjoy reading to the Cone students, who are engaged, yet excited, when Wednesday comes around and their role models walk in the door. The teachers at Cone love when the players come, since the students are excited and ready to learn. Both the Page team, as well as the Cone students and teachers are hoping that this partnership will last well into the future. The Pirate’s objective in this is to help younger kids learn to read, as well as encourage them to stay in school and to work hard, so that one day, they may be reading books to Cone Elementary students.
