Celebrating Black History Month!

Black History Month is the shortest month of the year, but that’s because multiple black historic events occurred during this month, like the Greensboro sit ins, Frederick Douglass birthday, and many other prominent events.
Popular companies, brands, and people overall have been doing things to lean in and participate in Black History Month. Brands such as Gucci and Adidas have attempted to create a design to signify this month but have received backlash. Gucci created an offensive sweater which portrays black face in a way; it didn’t sit well with the black community as it was quite disrespectful. As for Adidas, they created a new white shoe design, inspired by the Harlem Renaissance (recognition for the cultural contribution from African Americans), according to a statement from Adidas. The problem that people couldn’t grasp their mind around is the fact that Adidas wants to celebrate Black History Month with a white shoe.
Although there was some backlash towards those two companies, It’s nice that they’ve made an attempt to acknowledge this month. Although, the companies should do some research and consult with others before putting out a design that may seem offensive. There were other contributions to this month that stores, apps, schools, and people have done to celebrate:
Snapchat created a Black History Month filter and presents a snap slide show of black excellence.
Target presented a Black History Month display
Teachers in schools have decorated their rooms, announced it on the announcements, and have done activities with their students so they have better understanding of it; whether it’s a coloring activity or a video on some significant figure in Black History.
A significant amount has been done this year that has been done to recognize this month.
Happy Black History Month!
