Students evacuated the building after a small fire

On Monday, October 11th, during 5th period, the fire department was called to Page High School during what students thought was a routine fire drill. As students heard sirens, they realized it was not a drill. Later, we learned that a trash can in the auxiliary gym had been set on fire. The next day, in 3rd period, the fire alarms went off again, followed shortly by sirens. While standing outside for almost an hour, rumors circled that yet another trash can was set on fire.

These rumors were later confirmed, followed by the announcement that the bathrooms were closed to prevent further incidents. As of now, the only open bathrooms are on 200 hall, 300 hall, and in G-wing. I asked assistant principal Mr. Carter about the bathroom closings, and he said the administration is still deciding how long the bathrooms will be closed, as the investigation into the trash can fires is ongoing.

Mr. Naglee and the rest of the Page staff are asking students with any information about the trash can fires to come forward or to contact Guilford County CrimeStoppers. Anonymous tips can be made to CrimeStoppers at 336-889-4000, or they can be submitted online at the CrimeStoppers website.

I believe I speak for most of the student body when I say that the bathroom closings are frustrating and inconvenient. What might’ve seemed like a silly prank at first has had consequences for all of us, even those who weren’t involved. If we want the bathrooms to be reopened, we need to step up and take full responsibility for what happened and keep it from happening again.
