The Varsity Baseball team finished their weekend showcase with a 1-2 record in Fayetteville. The Pirates beat Jack Britt, but took close losses to Scotland County and Douglas Byrd. Although the team played well they had a scary injury in one of their Saturday games. Junior, Tyler Deberry took a fastball while up at bat straight to his eye. He was rushed straight to the hospital, but he was very fortunate when it was determined that he would not lose any vision in his eye. According to his teammates, he took the fastball like a champ and plans to return to the field in the next few weeks. I was able to speak with Tyler about his injury and he remarked, “When I got hit I couldn’t see anything. I wasn’t scared because I figure my eye had just swelled shut, but according to my teammates my eye was disgusting! Who cares about a little black eye anyway, I will be back on the field by next week!”

This Saturday, the Pirates traveled to Richmond County to take on one of the best teams in the state. Through eight innings, the Pirates had it tied up 1-1, but after a scoreless ninth inning the Pirates ended up losing the game. Although it was a loss, the entire team concluded they played really well and are ready to start conference play!
