September is suicide prevention month. Suicide prevention month is a time to remember the lost
lives due to suicide and spreading awareness. A month to acknowledge the millions, individuals
and all families who have experienced suicidal thoughts or been impacted by suicide. More than
720,000 people (about half the population of Idaho) die to suicide every year. Suicide is the third
leading cause of death in ages 15-29. During September, and throughout the year, we can care
about suicide prevention; connect to community, culture, data, and research; and collaborate
with others to address this public health problem that has impacted millions of Americans.
Suicide prevention month. allows us to shine a special, encouraging light on this topic that
affects us all & send a clear, hopeful message that help is available & suicide can be prevented.
Suicide is complex and determined by multiple combinations of factors, such as mental illness,
substance misuse, trauma, painful losses, exposure to violence, and social isolation. Learning
the signs of someone having suicidal thoughts can make a massive impact and may even save
someone’s life. The national suicide prevention lifeline is 988. Take the time and research ways
you can make a difference somewhere near you.
