There is no Halloween without candy and scary campfire stories. These are some of my favorite scary campfire stories:
The Wolf Girl at Devil’s River: This story centers around the notoriously haunted Espantasa Lake. Travelers avoided that lake mostly because of the thick ghostly fog and, of course, the ghost girl. In 1845, a young boy reported seeing an unclothed girl devouring a goat alongside a pack of wolves. The girl was later captured by cowboys who tried to lock her in a shack. Later that night she escaped and hasn’t been seen since – except in ghost form.
La Llorona (The Weeping Woman): This is the scariest of all. It is from Mexican folklore. This legend centers around a ghost woman who lost her children in life. The tale says she wanders near the river looking for her kids. La Llorona is said to kidnap kids who wander near her because she mistakes them for her own.
The Ax Murder House: The Villisca Ax Murder House in Iowa is a well-known tourist attraction for ghost hunters and horror seekers. It is the site of gruesome unsolved murders in 1912. Six children and two adults had their skulls crushed in by an unknown perpetrator. In 1994, the house was purchased and renovated back to the 1912 look. You can stay overnight for $428. Overnight guests report strange paranormal experiences like visions of a man roaming the halls with an axe.
The Dock Street Theater: The Dock started off as a hotel in the 1800s. A young woman named Nettie ended up turning to prostitution, and she did not make as much money as she thought she deserved. One day she was on the 2nd floor of a balcony, posted up waiting for business as she did every day. Legend says that she got struck by lightning and died instantly. They say
that her spirit still haunts the Dock.
Phillips Church Graveyard: Located on Church Street, St. Philips Episcopal Church graveyard is home to many notable figures from American History. Edward Rutledge, who signed the Declaration of Independence, lived there. As the story goes, one night a woman was spotted in the graveyard crying next to a small gravestone, belonging to her late son who died at a young age. Legend says at night you can still hear this mother crying over her baby, even centuries later.
