The Grand Canyon is currently holding one of its largest death stretches for years with at least 16 deaths so far this year. The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular national parks in the U.S. with about 6.2 million visitors every year. The park was founded in 1919 and stretches over 1875 square miles. The canyon itself was carved by the Colorado river 50 to 70 million years ago with newer parts still growing.
There have been many different types of incidents recently. In August alone a man died while attempting a dangerous and illegal base jump, 2 others drowned in the canyon, 1 more person was found dead after going on a solo backpacking trip into the canyon, and another person was found 150 feet below the ridge after a multi-day search by park officials.
Some recent deaths, like a 57-year-old man found dead after a heat wave, have been caused by weather. The river has been lower than it used to be because of global warming. A 33-year-old woman was found dead after a flash flood, and 2 other bodies were found last week.
