Free Comic Book Day is an annual event celebrated on the first Saturday of May. Participating, Comic shops give the community free comics and previews of upcoming series to anyone who comes to the store that day. The event was founded to encourage people to support local comic stores and attract new readers. So, where can you grab free comics locally? My personal favorite spot is Acme Comics. They have two locations in Greensboro. This year, at their downtown location, they are hosting a Free Comic Book Day block party.
The surrounding restaurants will be helping to organize the event as well. Local artists and vendors will be selling across the street from Acme. If you are looking for something a little less extravagant, SSalefish Comics is also open for Free Comic Book Day this year at their Greensboro location (and their others scattered around the Carolinas). Some smaller shops may not be participating, but still, if you have time, visit them. Free Comic Book Day is all about supporting local comic sellers of all sizes, so go out this weekend and get some comics!
