After a 6-year long wait, the greatly anticipated game “Hollow Knight: Silksong” was releasd on September 4th, 2025. After the incredible success of their first game “Hollow Knight” which started with a Kickstarter campaign that became a global hit. The developers known as Team Cherry have turned which was previously planned to be additional content for Hollow Knight evolved into an entire game. However, it would take 6 long years for this vision to come to fruition, but not for the reasons you think.
Many games that take such a long time to release after the first one get caught up in something known as “development hell” where the game is trapped in a state of limbo and not being worked on due to a myriad of technical or legal reasons. Recently however, after the heads of Team Cherry participated in an interview with Bloomberg, people have started describing the development of Silksong as being stuck in “development heaven”. Quoting from the co-director of Team Cherry, Ari Gibson “”It was never stuck or anything. It was always progressing. It’s just the case that we’re a small team, and games take a lot of time…I remember at some point I just had to stop sketching…You realize, ‘If I don’t stop drawing, this is going to take 15 years to finish,'”. Over these six years the excitement for Silksong has only grown, becoming the most wishlisted game on the gaming platform Steam’s history garnering over 5 million wishlists. The excitement has been so great some other developers have delayed their own projects so that they may get more attention.
Over the past 6 years the community for Hollow Knight has been going, for lack of a better term, a tad insane. Which was not helped by the rather hilarious decision by Team Cherry to stay quiet for years at a time. The dedicated part of the community devoted to waiting for Silksong who called themselves “Skongers” were divided into “Believers” and “Doubters” who constantly posted “Silkposts” which were posts that tried to deceive other fans that news or release dates had come out. Even the developers were aware of the insanity. ““Feels like we’re going to ruin their fun by releasing the game,” says co-director William Pellen on the subject.
Now, after the release, there is one thing on everybody’s minds “is it good?”. Well, quoting one of the two play testers Trobbiani who says that Team Cherry have tuned everything to “almost perfection” and the statement that “Once people finish it, they’re going to have no complaints,” which gives great credence to the game’s quality and polish, and with Team Cherry’s plan to add more in the future, it looks like the excitement will not stop now. And, hopefully we’ll get six years worth of updates!
