Captain Jordan Smith was asked what does Team Voyage mean to him and he replied, “Team Voyage means a way to change stereotypes given to young African American men and also to better myself in the process.” Team Voyage is a group to promote academic investment and social capital with African American males at Page High School. This group addresses the achievements found in our nation. Team Voyage strives to provide positive support to those in the club to help them achieve their goals. Another Captain, Chris Bennett, was asked what Team Voyage meant to him and he replied, “Team Voyage is a brotherhood perfecting and preparing ourselves for the future and any obstacles I our way.” What Team Voyage does for Page High School is try to change everyone’s point of view, in the words of advisor Mrs. Hunter said “The members of Team Voyage do a wide variety for Page. We were involved in the Page-Grimsley Pep Rally this year. Voyage Captains helped escort the new superintendent, Dr. Contreras, around Page High School for her first visit. We have assisted with giving tours and helping teachers with various projects. Recently we worked with various service projects with our highlight being our teddy bear drive to take children at Brenner’s Children’s Hospital.” “Team Voyage to me means family. It’s like my family away from my real blood. Doing the things we do is in honor because it has sparked us to better ourselves and each other while reaching out and helping other people.” He says this because all captains have their own teams (made up of about 10 underclassmen). They are responsible for organizing and leading different meetings and activities. They also have to attend a special training over the summer to become a captain. To be able to be a part of this group you will have to go through an interview process, attend regular meetings and abide by a detailed code of conduct.
In Captain George White’s words, “Team Voyage to me is a brotherhood of outstanding black men that fight through adversity when they are down that continue to do the right thing and also do not let anything hold them back.” If you are interested in joining Team Voyage see Mrs. Hunter in room 310.
