You may have heard many different horror stories throughout your life, but have you ever thought about the ones that may have happened around us. From Biltmore Greensboro to Guilford College there have been some worrisome events.
Guilford College was built in 1837 and became a liberal arts school in 1888. In 1961, local philanthropist Charles Dana donated a lot to build an auditorium. This building is the newest and considered the most haunted building on the campus. During the revolutionary war this land hosted the Battle at the Courthouse in 1781. The land where the Dana Auditorium was built was a designated area for wounded soldiers to go. Many soldiers died in that field. Students started claiming that they saw a ghost of a soldier wandering the field at night, stuck in the battle. Other spirits have made the auditorium home like a little girl who likes to spend her time in the choir room, a man in a brown suit that explores the auditorium, and even a spirit who enjoys playing music on the piano. It is unclear what these spirits want.
Guilford College is directly across the street from the New Garden Cemetery dating back to the 17th century. This site also includes a mass grave for British and American soldiers that died in the Revolutionary War. It seems as if the soldiers have wandered across the street to the campus. None of the students feel as if the spirits are evil but when they encounter the spirits alone the hair on their necks stand on end. Haunted Hotspots are Hendricks Hall and Mary Hobbs Hall, girl’s dormitories, where Charlie Hendricks is thought to wander around the hall by his name because he had already spent so much time dedicated to the college. During the 1970s Mary Hobbs Hall was the site of a sudden fire. The attic had to be shut down and rebuilt. The rumor is that there is a woman who died in the fire and will make her presence known in the hallways at night.
Guilford Courthouse National Park is in Greensboro and was the site of a large battle that led to the end of the Revolutionary War. Many soldiers were buried not too far from where they died and there are many people buried on the park lands. There are only 2 of these mass graves located. Spirits of soldiers are commonly seen marching around the park and there is 1 spirit with a missing head seen riding his horse. Some residents claimed to meet a spirit that they originally thought was a battle reenactor who when they tried to spark a conversation the spirit quietly walked away. One tourist turned to talk to the reenactor and watched him disappear. They asked park officials if there was a reenactment that day and there wasn’t one scheduled.
A local Methodist Church built an establishment for females to gain a higher education. This small 4-year college became the Greensboro Female College in 1833 and a co-ed college in the 1950s. The school is known for its paranormal activity reported by students. The most haunted buildings are assumed to be the main campus hall and the James Addison Jones Library. During 1918 a devastating influenza pandemic tore apart the people of Greensboro and several girls fell ill and it is believed that their spirits haunt their former dormitories where they died. A few students reported seeing the ghost of a little girl walking around the campus as well as several Confederate soldiers who appear pretty frequently whose disembodied voices can be heard at night while most students are asleep.
The Biltmore Greensboro is located in the business district as a boutique hotel built in 1903 by the Cone brothers as an office for them and later apartments secretly run as a brothel. The 2 ghosts include Philip, an accountant for the brothers but was murdered in the alley beside the hotel from a piano wire that cut his throat because some say that he found discrepancies with the brothers’ finances, and Lydia, who worked at the brothel and had a disagreement with a client and was thrown off of a balcony to her death and she haunts room 223 where she used to live.
