This winter has been full of winter storms that have stretched across the country. There have even been storms with snow here in Greensboro that have cancelled several days of school. These storms and cold temperatures have been caused by a disruption in the polar vortex which is the ring of cold air that is usually trapped around the North Pole. The last time this happened and reached the South was in 2021. This disruption has caused snow as far south as Texas in the U.S. This winter weather has caused many issues with having school for our district. Guilford County Schools has had 3 remote days with online meetings, 2 2 hour delays, and a 1 hour early release so far as of this story being punished. The difficulty with plowing off the roads because the snow had melted slightly with the temperatures going above freezing slightly so that when it goes back below freezing the water has formed dense ice that is almost impossible to plow off of the roads.
