Scientists recently “brought back” another extinct animal – The Dire Wolf. The Dire Wolf went extinct 12,500 years ago. The dire wolf also know as Aenocyon dirus was a prehistoric animal from North and South America during the Pleistocene and Early Holocene epochs. In other words, the dire wolf was last seen some 10 thousand years ago. The dire wolf was considered to look like the modern gray wolves but with stronger jaws and larger teeth. However, it is thought the dire wolf evolved independently. Science too has evolved, and despite ethical concerns, a wolf with uncanny similarity to the dire wolf was brought back. As of right now, there are two baby dire wolves that are derived from the DNA of taxidermized museum dire wolves and grey wolves. They used the grey wolves because of the 99.4% of DNA the two wolves share despite the dire wolf evolving separately, scientist believe they express enough similar traits. These traits include a distinct coat color. Many experts believe these are not true dire wolfs just wolves with some dire wolf characteristics. However, many do believe the dire wolves look just like those found in Game of Thrones.
