In a remarkable act of generosity, Kaleb Gatlin, a senior at New Garden Friends School in Greensboro NC, successfully raised over $18,000 to purchase new athletic shoes for every student at Sumner Elementary School. This initiative, part of his senior capstone project titled “Step Up for Sumner,” aimed to support students at the Title I school, where all pupils qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
Gatlin’s project began after volunteering in his cousin’s third-grade classroom at Sumner Elementary. After noticing how many students lacked proper footwear, he partnered with the nonprofit organization Shoes That Fit to expand his mission beyond a singular classroom. Through community donations, Gatlin exceeded his fundraising goal, ensuring that all 611 students received brand-new sneakers from brands like Nike, Puma, and Adidas.
The impact of Gatlin’s efforts was evident during the shoe distribution event, where students eagerly and excitedly opened their boxes, with most expressing joy and disbelief. Sumner Elementary Principal Tiffany Hinton highlighted the significance of this contribution, noting that adequate footwear removes barriers to attendance and participation, thereby promoting student success. This furthers the students abilities to maintain progress and achievements in the classroom.
In recognition of his dedication, Guilford County Schools offered Gatlin a future teaching contract upon completion of his education and licensure requirements. Gatlin plans to attend UNC Charlotte to pursue a degree in education, further demonstrating his commitment to serving his community.
Gatlin’s initiative underscores the profound impact that individual action and community support can have on addressing basic needs and fostering educational equity and success.
