On September 4, 2025, the government of Nepal banned social media throughout the country because the companies did not sign up and comply with their new ministry of communicative technology. This led to mass, violent, protests across the country that led to mass destruction of many government buildings.
After the ban many gen-z citizens started to protest. These protests then became violent with many different buildings getting burned down like the parliament, Singha Durbar palace, and many different politician’s homes. The government was overthrown in the process. This leaves the country and people of Nepal with an unknown future.
The prime minister of Nepal, KP Oli, resigned because of the violence. The Nepalese government has now taken over the streets of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and now are attempting to set up the government once again after this violence. Within the attempt to regain the capital by the military they clashed with civilians and ended up with 13 fatalities.
This unrest leaves a mark for all other governments around the world. If a country’s government such as Nepal’s can fall so easily to people protesting, does the government truly have the power that they think they do over us?
