Five games into the season, Page Baseball has posted an winning record of 3-2. Wins for the Pirates include a 10-0 trouncing of Cornerstone in the season opener, a 6-1 victory against Northwest Guilford this past Saturday, and their most recent win against High Point Central with a final of 3-1. Losses for the Pirates include R.J. Reynolds and Lee County, both of which happened after the season opener.
With the wins against Northwest Guilford and High Point Central, the Pirates sit atop the Metro 4A Conference Standings. Behind the Pirates are the Whirlies, who like the Pirates have not yet lost in conference but have only played one game.
The Pirates have been led offensively by strong batters such as junior McKinnon Martinelli, who boasts a team-high .364 batting average. Behind Martinelli is senior Kobe Phillips, who is currently batting .308 and tied for most at-bats and hits(four) on the team. Senior Garett Willett has also impressed on offense, batting .200 and leading the Pirates with six runs and three stolen bases.
In terms of pitching and fielding, senior Jake Knapp has been ripping batters apart from the mound. At the present, Jake’s stats claim 22 strikeouts, 12.2 innings pitched, two wins, and perhaps most impressive of all a 1.1 ERA. Behind Knapp is McKinnon Martinelli, who has currently pitched nine innings and has a .75 ERA. Fielding wise, the Pirates’ fielding has impressed with a .948 fielding percentage. Some of the Pirates still remain perfect in this category such as infielder Evan Gill and catcher CJ Arnold.
With today’s matchup against Wheatmore being cancelled due to inclement weather, the Pirates hope to play next tomorrow at Northwest Guilford at 7:00. Catcher CJ Arnold states, “Tomorrow, we play Northwest Guilford for the second time. We’ve already beaten them once and we know we can beat them again. The plan is to go out there and play like we’re capable of and have fun as a family.” Good luck to the Pirates in their matchup tomorrow!
