This past Sunday, the Washington Capitals and the New York Islanders faced off for a game in New York. Coming into the game, Washington Capitals Left wing, Alex Ovechkin had scored 894 goals in his career, tied with Wayne Gretzky, arguably the greatest player to touch the ice, for the NHL record. This game became one for the NHL history books. At the 12-and-a-half-minute mark of the second period, Ovechkin set up in his sweet spot at the left circle, he received a pass from his teammate Tom Wilson, and then it happened, a shot for history. Ovechkin had done it, he scored his 895th goal and broke Wayne Gretzky’s record. The game stopped for 25 minutes to celebrate Ovechkin’s achievement and the commissioner and Wayne Gretsky honored him on the center of the ice.
Although the Capitals went on to lose 4-1 to the Islanders, they went home with their heads up high knowing the whole world watched on of their players rise to the top of goal scoring leaderboard. Ovechkin still has one more season left on his contract and although he once said he would retire after he broke Gretzky’s record, some people are left wondering if he really will, and if plays another year, could he blow Gretzky’s record out of the water? Gretzky ended his career with 894 goals and Ovechkin has surpassed that feat midseason with maybe more years to go, his ceiling is very high. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out and the potential debate on who is the GOAT of hockey. Gretzky or Ovechkin, you decide.
