On Friday, November 18th, 2022, Page High School students ages 16 & up had the opportunity to participate in the Blood Donation Drive by the American Red Cross Organization. Students donated to a cause that can help patients recovering from surgical operations, cancer treatments, chronic illnesses and other traumatic injuries that require blood replenishment. With such a prominent organization advocating for a good cause, we asked some of our Page High School students why they chose to participate, and if more people should participate in these Blood Drives.
Senior and Student Council member Molly Pope said “I chose to participate to in the Blood Drive because it’s basically a tradition that we’ve done in student council throughout high school. I was super interested in participating this year, as it was the first year since Covid that I’ve been able to participate due to the age boundaries throughout, and so I was excited to donate blood and help others in need.” She believes more people should participate in the future, saying “I think more people should participate because it’s such a great opportunity to support those in your community that in other ways might not be able to, and you never know when someone might need blood, so it’s just great to support our hospitals and our ongoing Healthcare systems.”
Another senior, Altyab, spoke on his participation in the Blood Drive. “I just thought it would be nice to give out blood for the community, especially since it doesn’t personally affect me. It’s a kind act which makes me feel good about the act and myself.” In terms of other people participating, he states “Yes, I think more people should participate in these drives if they feel comfortable doing so. You never know how far a small act of kindness can go and wouldn’t hurt to try it out.” Through these interviews, student participants share their positive impressions about the Blood Drive. They also encourage others to participate as a way to step out of their comfort zone and contribute to a helpful cause.
Additional Information: The blood drive unfortunately ended early on Friday due to unforeseen difficulties. It is alleged that the collection area became too hot and overwhelming for several participants, despite the presence of multiple fans in the space. In the interest of protecting student safety, the drive came to a close as the difficulties were addressed.
