On Saturday, September 7th, 26 year old, Diondre Overton attended a house party at 3205 Spring Mill Road, around 2:30 am. Witnesses say a fight broke out, and Diondre immediately stepped in to help and break it up. In the process of doing so, he was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead on the scene. Diondre was seen as a great person by everyone who knew him. Andy Durham of greensborosports.com says he was a good man and died trying to defuse a bad situation.
Diondre was a wide receiver on the Varsity Football Team at Page High School in 2015 and 2016. As a Junior, he had 31 catches for 577 yards and 4 touchdowns, and 78 catches for 1,251 yards with 15 touchdowns his senior year. He was also on Page’s basketball team from 2013 to 2016, averaging 14.6 points per game. After high school, Overton went to Clemson University and won two national championships as a wide receiver on football team in 2016 and 2018. According to 247Sports, he was the number four overall prospect in the state. He finished his college career at Clemson with 52 catches for 777 yards and 7 touchdowns.
After graduating from Clemson, Diondre spent a few years playing for CFL team, Hamilton Tiger-Cats as well as the Vienne Vikings in the European Football League. He later played on the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars for in 2022 and 2023 and the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL in 2023. Most recently he played for the Memphis Showboats of the UFL this year. It’s safe to say he was going to go on to accomplish great things.
Many people have hoped the police will make an arrest because there are multiple witness who saw who committed this crime, yet they won’t speak up. In 2019, a very similar tragedy happened when Sincere Davis, a Senior and football player for Page at the time, was murdered just at apartments just a few miles away from the school. Still in 2024, No arrests have been made regarding to Davis’ death, yet there are people who saw the perpetrator but still won’t say who it was. But unlike the Davis’ case, justice has been served for Diondre. On September 7th, 20-year-old Jeremiah Diago Blanks was arrested in connection to the murder of Diondre. Our thoughts and prayers go out the Overton family and we will miss you dearly Diondre.
