Over the summer Page High school removed all of the lockers from the walls of 300 hall to clear space so that people can more easily walk around. Many are wondering why we weren’t using the lockers in the first place.
Lockers were first introduced in the late 1800s and became more widespread and uniform around 1923. They were made so that students could have a place to store their personal belongings like jackets and other things during the school day safely. Before 1923 lockers were generally made from wood because of cheapness but after 1923 they were made from metal because they were more mass produced. The reason there was such a demand for them was because more people were getting educated in large public school systems. Before then more people went to small schoolhouses and were home schooled but with the more modern ideals more people than ever went to school. Eventually the idea spread to be a staple all around the world.
One reason that schools may not use lockers anymore is because there isn’t enough space. While the number of people that are attending schools is increasing, many school buildings are not being rebuilt or added on to for these larger numbers. They also might be eradicated because of the Coronavirus pandemic. All students and teachers were forced to abandon the schools and learn remotely at home. With everyone later going back into the schools lockers may have just been forgotten about and lost with the adjustment and never looked back to.
