Spirit Halloween began in 1983 when founder Joe Marver transformed his clothing store into a seasonal Halloween pop-up after noticing a nearby costume shop’s success. The company, initially called Spirit Party & Costume Co., quickly expanded to 60 locations before Marver sold it to Spencer Gifts in 1999. Under Spencer Gifts, the brand continued to grow, and today it is the largest seasonal Halloween retailer in North America with over 1,500 locations.
