Don’t Let Relationships Define You

High school consists of many things: stress, cliques, tests, projects, good days, bad days, and some days in between. High school also consists of something all of us teenagers think matters most: relationships. Teenagers today, such as myself, have experienced heartbreak, drama, and maybe even an unrequited love. With it being my senior year in high school, I can honestly say relationships are not everything. Many teenagers believe they have met “the one”, while others are suffering heartbreak, thinking they can never love again. Teenagers today are losing sleep over a boy or a girl who makes you question whether tomorrow will be THE day… the day when everything will be okay again. What we high school students don’t understand is that it doesn’t work that way because tomorrow is not the plot point in your character arc. It can be good to experience relationships, but you need to remember all the relationships you have experienced bring you one step closer to discovering the person “perfect” for you. With that being said, experience relationships, but do not make them the sole purpose of your high school career. High school is about expanding your horizon of possibilities and discovering who you are as an individual; it’s about figuring out what you want to make of yourself and how you’re going to accomplish that. A quote I live by is “Don’t be with someone who makes you happy, BE someone who makes you happy”. In the end, you have your whole life ahead of you and high school is supposed to consist of many memories: memories you can learn from, memories you want to forget, and memories you will never forget. As you make those memories, do not forget that high school is about more than just finding your soul mate; it’s about the experiences you can’t experience after graduation day.
