Valentines Day: We Love it, We Love It Not?

Dating back hundreds of years ago, Valentines Day is the one day of the year dedicated to promote your love. This holiday was created when St. Valentine secretly married couples during Emperor Claudius II of Rome’s dictatorship. From that point on his heroic duties called for a celebration among the world. Although not everyone celebrates this holiday, those who do typically make an ordeal out of. In all actuality the holiday is used as an excuse to express your feelings and show your gratitude. However, why is only one day dedicated to that? Or is it even socially acceptable to express your feelings and gratitude for one another on February 14th?

Valentines Day is kind of a controversial topic, and people’s opinions are easily swayed whether they’re in a relationship or not when Valentines Day rolls around. For some it is difficult to see the point in dedicating a whole day to love, and making that effort to express it, rather than just expressing how you feel every other day of the year. On the flip side, some people really enjoy this holiday and look forward to it yearly.

I asked a few students if they think Valentines Day is an important holiday or if they don’t think it should be celebrated.

Tierra Scott said, “No, I don’t believe that Valentines Day is an important holiday. Why should there be ONE day out of the year designated to showing your love and appreciation for a special person? That’s right, it shouldn’t. If a person is truly significant, you should show them your gratitude EVERYDAY. So sure, Valentines Day is cute in the aspect of children giving candy to one another, but it’s not important. We don’t even get a day off on Valentines day.”

Molly Stevens said, “I think Valentines Day is very important! I think it’s amazing to have a day where we can celebrate love. People assume that if they don’t have a significant other that the holiday is irrelevant but I think it’s more of a day to celebrate all of your loved ones!”

Hardy Brown said, “No I don’t think Valentines Day is an important holiday. It does not serve a significant purpose and is more of a holiday meant for fun.”

Tate Coley said, “I don’t think it’s an important holiday. I don’t think so because we don’t get off from school. Also because not everyone has a valentine so not everyone.”
