Is There Too Much Pressure on Girls to Have “Perfect” Bodies?

Girls are constantly worried about being skinny, having a thigh gap, and having a flat stomach so they appear to have the “perfect” body. Girls are lowering their self-esteems because they don’t feel as pretty as those girls in magazines nor look like a Victoria’s Secret model. This causes girls to constantly compare themselves to other girls, when they should love their own body. What is worse is that girls are calling other girls “fat” or “ugly” which makes girl even more upset with their appearances and bodies. Especially with summer right around the corner, many girls are putting all effort into getting the perfect bikini body; however, some of those efforts are leading to unhealthy habits.  It is often seen in high school girl students that they are barely eating or not eating at all, to prevent themselves from gaining weight. Personally, I have seen my peers go to extreme extents to get the “perfect” body such as working out twice a day everyday, skipping meals, and trying out unhealthy detoxes. It is sad that girls are so upset with the way their body looks that they are willing to go to these extents. Society has put so much pressure on girls that girls as young as 1st grade students want to be thinner. It was found that 42% of 1st-3rd grade girls wished to be thinner. The pressure girls feel to have a “perfect” body can also lead to extremes such as depression and suicide. Teenage boys don’t even care about this “perfect” body that girls want so bad. Most boys even believe it is unattractive for girls to be stick-skinny. Girls are internally putting this pressure on themselves along with magazines and the media showing girls off with these “perfect” bodies, when it is just Photoshop. Girls should be confident with their bodies and society can help by not putting as much pressure on girls to feel the need to have the “perfect” body.
