Welcome back to another year of Robertson’s Reportings! What a crazy few weeks the world has seen. Shootings and bombings, terrorism and a virus that will not surrender, tropical storms and so much more. The news relentlessly proclaims bad things happening, and while that is a reflection of the state of the world at certain times, there are still so many things to be grateful for. On a bad day, I wonder to myself why people can be so frustrating. I see everything from a negative point of view on those days, and looking at the news, it’s understandable why. However, I have to remind myself that life truly is good. Some days (although it should be all days) I look around and have so much hope in the world. It’s important to remember all of the little things like the person whose laugh you love to hear, or the person who picked up your pencil when you dropped it in the hallway, or even the person who makes funny, sometimes ridiculous comments in class. When I think about these things, I smile and recognize what I have to be grateful for. As I share this week’s news with you, I want you to remember all of the small pieces of joy in your life. Things may seem to be going wrong all around you, but life is beautiful. Now, let’s dive in. 

The U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has been completed; however, 100-200 Americans still remain in Afghanistan, not to mention the thousands of people attempting to flee from their own country. Some Americans will not be coming home, including the 13 troops who were killed in the Kabul airport attack. Eleven Marines were killed along with one Army soldier and one member of the Navy. These heroic men and women should never be forgotten for their immeasurable contributions to America.

Hurricane Ida has caused extremely large amounts of flooding across the Northeast, as flooding and other effects of the hurricane have led to 82 deaths and vast amounts of destruction. Hurricane Ida made landfall on the 16th anniversary of the legendary Hurricane Katrina. Luckily, Greensboro only received dark, gloomy clouds and a rainy day since the hurricane took a path from Louisiana to New York and other northeastern states, skipping over most of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. 

Texas passed a law to ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, which is primarily significant because 85 to 90 percent of abortions take place after six weeks. After outrage from pro-abortionists and President Biden who called the law “extreme,” the Supreme Court refused to block the law from going into effect. A primary reason for opposition to the law is that it does not make exceptions for rape or sexual assault. Others argue that many women do not know they are pregnant at six weeks. However, there are many people who support the law because of their concerns for the unborn babies.
