Missing Girl Found, Hidden Details in Picasso Painting, and Father’s Day: Weekly News of 5/12-17

Missing Girl is found years later in North Carolina- It has been years 6 years since Kayla Unbehaun had vanished with her mother after court decided full custody to her father. When she was just 9 years old she was abducted by her non- custodial mother. Ryan Iserka, Kayla’s father, says that in 2017, Kayla and her mom left for a camping trip and never came back. Ryan eventually reported this as kidnapping. These situations are so common that nearly 360,000 reports of missing children were reported to the FBI in 2022. Then, on Saturday evening, Kayla was spotted years later at a shop in North Carolina. An employee at the shop recognized her from Netflix’s series “Unsolved Mysteries” and called the police immediately. Kayla’s mother was arrested that Saturday evening and was taken to Buncombe County, North Carolina. Meanwhile, Iserka is overjoyed to be finally reunited with his daughter after so many years. He thanked the people on Facebook for keeping her story alive. He is forever grateful, as he said in a statement, “We ask for privacy as we get to know each other again and navigate this new beginning.”

Museum discovered hidden animal in a Picasso Painting- Conservators at the Guggenheim Museum uncovered something hidden in one of Picasso’s earliest paintings, “Le Moulin de la Galette”. It was an image of a lapdog wearing a red bow covered by black paint. It seemed as if Picasso painted over the dog because it was flashy. This painting depicts a lively scene at the titular venue- a famous Parisian dance hall that was painted by many other artists in that time period. Couples wearing suits and dresses are painted dancing, seeming lively. At the table painted there is an outline that seems to be painted over by dark paint. Conservators were able to gather information and used X-ray fluorescence to generate an image of what the lapdog originally looked like. This lapdog was a representation of Cavalier King Charles’ Spaniel. It is assumed that Picasso removed the lapdog was because it generated too much attention since the dog stood out. Picasso is known to make changes to his paintings and the “Le Moulin de la Galette” is now the earliest example of his modifications.
