Club Corner: Film Club

Page High School offers a significant amount of clubs for our students. One of those clubs in particular really stands out and is being recognized in this “Club Corner” article. The Page High Film Club is led by English teacher, Mr. Johnson. He states that “the club was started to encourage students to think critically about the movies they consume”. He shares with us that “everybody loves movies, but not everybody can explain why they love a certain movie or how the way a movie is made can make it better. As a certified film critic, I’ve been thinking and writing critically about movies for over a decade, and I wanted to share that knowledge with students”. In the club, students discuss the elements of filmmaking, such as: framing, shot composition, editing, sound, camera movement, and more. He tells us that his goal is for students to realize that all of these elements serve a purpose, either in terms of deeper “meaning” or in terms of impacting the audience”. He encourages many students to join and he explains, “Most students would enjoy the club because it’s very flexible in terms of scheduling and it doesn’t require much effort outside of watching and thinking. Students don’t have to come every week if they don’t want to. To get involved, students just have to come see me and show up to the meetings. There is a monthly permission slip they need to get signed so that I know they are allowed to watch every movie, and they also need permission to watch R-rated films. Once that’s taken care of, they just need to show up on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school!” Sienna Lafon, a sophomore here at Page, who has been in club since it started, tells us that her favorite part about the club is “finding people who like and take interest in the same movies as you”. Sienna Lafon enjoys finding new movies to watch and learning something as well.

Mr. Johnson would like to announce that the club is hoping to organize a public film screening in the auditorium this December in order to raise money to renew the school-wide copyright license. It will be similar to what Mr. Close’s marketing class did with Gravity and Guardians Of The Galaxy in previous years. If any students would like experience working with the community to organize a large event, we would appreciate the help!
