Ms. Setzer’s first period, AP literature, the students participated in a creative activity. While reading the book Tracks by Louise Erdrich, Ms. Setzer had the students create “motif mobiles” for her classroom. Using coat hangers, the students found quotes in the book to explain four different motifs within the novel. The students had to find three quotes for each motif in the book assigned to the students. In addition to the three motifs assigned, students also found their own motif in the novel. The students were asked to creatively create these “motif mobiles” with construction paper and markers, and hang them on the coat hangers with string. Students were also asked to present these in front of the class, while discussing how the motifs can contribute to a theme within the novel.
