In recent years, video game films and TV adaptations have been coming to the big screen more and more often. They have historically been very hit or miss with the recently released Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (2024) making almost 5x its budget at the box office, and shows like Fallout (2024) becoming popular with people who have never even touched a gaming system. On the other hand, movies like Postal (2007) and Borderlands (2024) made nowhere near the money it cost to make them, becoming box office bombs. So, where will A Minecraft Movie fall?
The anticipation for this film is undeniable. The idea of a film adaptation for Minecraft has been floated since 2014. A release date was originally planned for 2018, but the movie changed writers many times throughout the years, causing complications. The movie began development with the current team in 2022. The cast includes Jack Black, playing the main character Steve, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge (who reportedly stars in the subplot).
The movie has also teased that many content creators who used to or still center their online presence around Minecraft will receive cameos. The sheer popularity of Minecraft may also contribute to it becoming a blockbuster, with it being the best- selling game in history. Though critic reviews are in, and they aren’t glowing (53% on Rotten Tomatoes), the pure hype around the film from audiences is expected to make it a success.
