Page High School Latin teacher Travis King was recently named Teacher of the Year, an award that recognizes educators for their dedication to students and their contributions to the school community. King, who is also the chair of the World Languages department, said he felt honored to receive the award, especially because of the teachers he works with every day.
“It’s honestly a great honor, especially considering what strong educators my coworkers are,” King said. “I get to work with a lot of people whom I respect immensely as educators, so to be recognized among them is incredibly humbling.” As Page’s Teacher of the Year, King will move on to represent the school in the district Teacher of the Year competition. He said he hopes to use the opportunity to highlight the work happening at Page, including the World Languages department.
“I hope that I am able to represent Page High well in the district competition,” King said. “I also hope that I’m able to highlight all the amazing things that happen in the World Language department and the entirety of Page High School.”
King described his classroom environment as energetic and challenging. While he joked that some students might call it “chaotic,” he said he hopes it is also a place where students feel comfortable learning and expressing themselves. Like many teachers, King said there are challenges that come with teaching. Some of the hardest situations are when students are dealing with problems outside of school that teachers cannot fully control.
“I think some of the most difficult situations are when students are struggling with something outside of my control, such as family issues,” King said. “I always try to help students advocate for themselves in those scenarios and bring in other members of our school community who can help.” King said it is important for classrooms to be safe and supportive environments where students feel comfortable growing and trying new things.
“I think students need their classrooms to be safe environments, and their teachers to help them grow without judgment,” King said. “For many students, school is the place where they can express themselves and follow their passions.” King also encourages students to speak up when they see something that could be improved.
“My advice to students is that it’s never too early to start making a difference,” King said. “If you see something that isn’t good, step up and try to make it better.” King’s recognition as Teacher of the Year highlights the impact he has had on students and the Page High School community.
