When August arrives, Medellín stops being just a city and becomes a place full of magic, music, flowers, and happiness. The green mountains around the city seem to wake up with the sound of songs, laughter, and applause from thousands of people waiting excitedly for the beginning of the Feria de las Flores. It does not matter if someone was born in Colombia or comes from another country because once they experience this festival, they understand why it is considered one of the most beautiful and exciting cultural celebrations in the world.
Early in the morning, the streets start to fill with bright colors. The air smells like fresh flowers, Colombian coffee, and delicious traditional food. People go outside wearing hats, ponchos, flowers in their hair, and colorful shirts. The energy is so happy that even the most serious person ends up dancing because during the fair in Medellín, even your legs make decisions by themselves.
One of the most important moments is the famous Silleteros Parade. Thousands of people wait for hours to watch the silleteros from Santa Elena carrying giant flower arrangements on their backs. Some silletas show Colombian landscapes while others have messages of love, peace, and hope. The most amazing part is that some silletas are very heavy, but the silleteros still walk proudly smiling while the crowd cheers for them. Many people even cry during the parade because it is not only art but also a family tradition passed from generation to generation for many years.
And when you think you’ve already seen enough beauty, the classic car parade begins. The streets fill with elegant, shiny cars from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. It feels like traveling back in time. There are red, blue, and vintage convertible cars perfectly restored. Some families even dress in old-fashioned clothes to match the parade while classical music plays around the city. People wave, dance, and take pictures like they are inside a movie.
But the fair does not end there. At night, Medellín becomes full of music and excitement. There are free concerts all around the city with salsa, vallenato, reggaeton, tropical music and Colombian popular music. People of all ages dance together even if they do not know each other. During the fair everyone becomes friends. There is always someone saying “Come dance even if you are bad at it”.
There are also fondas which are traditional places decorated like old towns from Antioquia. People eat traditional food, listen to music and enjoy games there. Visiting a fonda feels like experiencing the true paisa spirit full of happiness, kindness and love for traditions. You can eat a delicious bandeja paisa with beans, rice, chicharrón, avocado, and arepa or enjoy empanadas, buñuelos, and mazamorra while listening to live music. And of course, Colombian coffee is everywhere because in Medellín, coffee almost runs through people’s veins.
During the fair, there are events for everyone. There are motorcycle parades, flower exhibitions, concerts, dance shows, cultural festivals, and activities for children. At night, the city lights shine beautifully over the mountains while the music and excitement continue everywhere. Medellín feels alive in a very special way.
The most beautiful part of the Feria de las Flores is not only the events or the flowers, but also the people. Paisa people have a special way of making visitors feel welcome. They always receive tourists with smiles, kindness, and pride for their culture. Many tourists arrive thinking they will only visit a beautiful city but they leave completely in love with the energy, culture and heart of Colombia.
The festival also represents the transformation of Medellín. It is a city that went through difficult times and today is admired around the world for its cultural innovation and warm people. During these days, Medellín shows that Colombia is joy, tradition, talent, art, and hope.
And when the fair ends, there is a strange feeling of happiness and nostalgia at the same time because anyone who experiences the Feria de las Flores once will always want to return. That is why the Feria de las Flores is not only a celebration. It is a Colombian pride, an unforgettable experience, and a beautiful explosion of life that makes anyone want to visit Medellín and shout with excitement
“Long live Colombia, long live Medellín, and may the flowers never end!”
