On Thanksgiving every year on channel NBC, the thanksgiving parade presented by Macy’s happens every year. Yeah, we all know about the cool floats and performances, but do you know the history behind it? The Macy’s Thanksgiving parade began in 1924 as “The Macy’s Christmas Parade” This was created by the employees to celebrate the opening of the new flagship store and boost holiday sales. The first parade even featured live animals from Central Park Zoo. In 1927, the event was renamed and replaced the live animals, with large inflatable balloons, and became the parade’s iconic feature. The name change was simple because of the renaming to reflect that the parade took place on thanksgiving day and it didn’t just have the goal anymore of ushering in the Christmas shopping season.
