Hot chocolate is a wondrous drink at this time of year, especially with all the snow and ice currently about, so why don’t we see where this beverage came to be. Chocolate beverages began in ancient South America and Mexico, specifically the Mayans. They grind cocoa seeds into a powder and then pour it into water along with some other
ingredients to create the first known version of hot chocolate. When the Mayans were conquered, the drink began to circulate throughout Europe. Becoming a popular beverage for the Upper Class. There are even special restaurants for chocolate dishes and beverages called Chocolate Houses which are akin to modern day coffee shops. In 1828, the first cocoa powder production machine was created allowing for the wider populace to enjoy the sweet chocolate drink and leading to its wintertime popularity.
