If you have paid much attention around the school to some of the posters that were up on the walls, you may have heard about the walkout protesting ICE. You may be wondering about it because of much local controversy online.
A walkout is a form of peaceful protest that is commonly used in schools in which students will leave their classes for a few minutes to protest and then quickly go back to class. Despite what many people may say about the walkout, this is completely legal and is protected under the First Amendment of the Constitution as they are allowed to protest peacefully as long as it is done with no violence and misconduct.
The protest here at Page was against Federal Immigration Enforcement, or ICE, because of many of their government directed encroachments on people that live and work within the United States. Controversy has not only been sparked by the increase in deportations but also because of several recent incidents. Alex Pretti was a 37-year-old American citizen who was born in Illinois. He worked as a nurse at an intensive care unit in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He joined the vast number of protests in the city on January 24, 2026 as there was a large immigration enforcement operation going on. He was unfortunately contained under claims that he had a firearm and shot 10 times in 5 seconds until he was killed. Later reports and video analysis found that he was unarmed and just recording the operation. This is just one example of several killings and many harmful situations that Federal Agents for ICE have committed in the recent past. ICE has not seemed to have been slowed down by incidents with president Trump’s full support.
The Page High School walkout happened at 1:45Am in which students made their way outside to the football field and peacefully protested. The event went on until around 2:15 where the students walked back into the building into class. This was an event that was acknowledged by the administration of the school and supervised by them. Students that did not want to participate stayed in class and were rejoined by their peers. The Page High School ICE walkout is one of the many high school walkouts for the same reason in the past few weeks. Page’s walkout was a quite large one with several hundred students joining in.
