Crosswalk Safety

Page is partnering with the Greensboro Police Department on Tuesday, February 26th to take a closer look at student safety regarding the recent crosswalk additions. This experiment will be conducted in the morning between 8:30 and 9:15 as well as in the afternoon between 3:30 and 4:15 at both the East Cone Boulevard and Golden Gate Drive crosswalks. There is a growing concern for students as well as drivers that someone will be injured due to the lack of understanding regarding who actually has the right of way. To clarify, if someone is crossing the crosswalk, they have the right of way and cars must stop. However, if someone is crossing the street where there is not a marked crosswalk, the pedestrian does not have the right of way. During the designated times, people may be stopped by officers and given either a warning, a citation, or educational materials to further encourage road safety. Distinguishing between who actually has the right of way can be confusing at times but the GPD and the Page administration hope that through this local operation drivers as well as pedestrians will be safer in the long run.
