Atlanta Shooting, McDonald’s Crime, and Olympic Medalist Death: Weekly News of 5/1-5

Atlanta Midtown Shooting- A midtown Atlanta gunman opened fire in a waiting room in the medical center, according to police. The shooter shot 5 people, one of which died at the scene. The others are severely injured. All victims who were shot were women. Police were called right away at the time of the shooting-12:08 pm ET on Wednesday. The chief states that police are still looking for the suspect. The suspect is to be identified as 24 year old Deion Patterson. Police say they are still searching for the suspect as well as the gun used in the shooting. Police say the suspect carjacked a vehicle and fled the scene. Investigations are being made and the police are still following up on the suspect.

Children were found in McDonald’s working until 2am- Two ten year-old children were found working until 2:00 a.m. at a Louisville McDonald’s. Agencies have been finding violations of child labor laws common in the Southeast. In states like Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland, and Ohio, over 305 children have been working in McDonald’s illegally, violating the child labor laws. Investigators from the agency found these 10 year-old children working at the McDonald’s while breaking other laws as well. The children weren’t paid and sometimes worked until 2 a.m. Tiffanie Boyd, Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer at McDonald’s USA, released a statement saying, “These reports are unacceptable, deeply troubling and run afoul of the high expectations we have for the entire McDonald’s brand. […] We are committed to ensuring our franchises have the resources they need to foster safe workplaces for all employees and maintain compliance with all labor laws.” Further investigations are pending.

Gold Olympic Medalist dies at 32- Olympic gold medalist was found dead in her home on Wednesday. Tori Bowie, a three time Olympic medalist and two time world champion in track and field has died according to her agent. The cause of death is yet to be disclosed. “We’ve lost a client, dear friend, daughter and sister. Tori was a champion…a beacon of light that shined so bright! We’re truly heartbroken and our prayers are with the family, friends and everyone that loved her,” Bowie’s team said in an Instagram post after the athlete’s death. Many are remembering her as an amazing representation for the United States.
