Christmas is the most well-known holiday in December. Christmas trees, cookies, gifts, and Santa Claus. In the history of Christmas traditions, Santa Claus has always been a big part of the holiday.
The legend of Santa Claus originated with Saint Nicholas, known for his generosity and kindness, especially towards the poor. And in Germany, Christkind replaces Saint Nicholas during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. Parents have often used Santa Claus as a way to encourage good behavior in children, with his famous “Naughty or Nice” list dictating who receives gifts or not. Good kids receive gifts, but what happens to those who are on the naughty list? Well, many folklores have their own versions. The Alpine regions have Krampus, a horned half-goat, half-demon who acts as Santa Claus’s darker counterpart. He appears on December 5th (Krampusnacht in German or “Krampus Night’), punishing bad kids by swatting them with birch branches, rattling chains, and sometimes dragging them to hell in his sack.
The Alsace-Lorraine region also has its own version, Hans Trapp. He was based on the historical Hans von Trotha, an excommunicated knight who was banished for his conflict with an abbot. He was said to have made a deal with the Devil and developed a taste for human flesh, disguising himself in straw to lure and kill children.
Then, we have Belsnickel in the Palatinate region (Germany) and in the Pennsylvania Dutch folklore, where he embodied the dual nature of Christmas, acting in the role of both Santa Claus and Krampus. The Icelandic folklore has the trolls Gryla, Leppalúði, and their thirteen children, the Yule Lads, along with the Yule Cat. Meanwhile, the French folklore has Le Père Fouettard (“Father Whipper”), who accompanies Saint Nicholas and dispenses lumps of coal and beats naughty children.
The good children may only have to worry about Santa Claus, but the naughty children are in a different state. So, ask yourselves, are you on the naughty list or on the nice list?

Krampus is one of the creepiest things I’ve seen out there and I’ve seen a lot but not krampus
