The city of Greensboro on Sunday commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Greensboro Six, drawing together residents, local officials and historians for a ceremony at Gillespie Golf Course that remembered one of the city’s early civil-rights milestones. It happened on Dec. 7, 2025, at the same course where six Black men tried to play golf in 1955, defying a white-only policy that previously had been on the books for the facility.
Their act of protest led to court fights that desegregated public recreation facilities throughout Greensboro. Sunday’s commemoration included a ceremonial tee shot, comments by community advocates and the debut of a 15-minute documentary that recounts the story of the Greensboro Six and its enduring reverberations.
Organizers said the gathering was both a tribute and a reminder. “What they did was change the direction of this city,” one speaker added. “Remembering them will help us learn about how everyday acts of resistance can inch a community forward.”
