The severe weather brought high-speed winds combined with heavy rain which forced schools in Guilford County and nearby districts to close their doors on Monday. Officials cited unsafe travel conditions for school buses as the primary reason for the closure.
The Greensboro area experienced storm activity throughout the day which produced strong wind gusts that created risks of falling debris and dangerous road conditions. Areas of the region received tornado warnings which resulted in emergency alerts being sent to residents’ cell phones. The radar warning showed rotation that could create tornadoes but no tornadoes touched down in the immediate area.
Community members expressed concern about the alerts which showed worsening weather conditions during the afternoon. The local officials recommended that residents should stay inside while they wait for weather service information updates.
The storms disrupted school athletic events because outdoor sports fields became waterlogged and unusable which resulted in multiple cancellations and urgent schedule modifications. Page High School moved its games to home fields that had turf because this surface better handles wet conditions and provides safer play.
The storm system began to leave the area after Monday evening which resulted in improved conditions. School officials have not yet announced whether any missed instructional time will be made up at a later date.
