Tests, projects, quizzes, homework, classwork, sports, extracurricular activities; these are all things that lead to the cause of stress for average high school students. Students are expected to not only maintain an average GPA, but as well be involved in activities outside of school. With only 24 hours in a day, this seems nearly impossible! Not to mention the homework to do, the chores around the house, and of course maintaining good hygiene with a normal sleep routine. All of these responsibilities have caused high school students unimaginable amounts of stress. With an increase of stress, it is proven that students are tending to do worse in school, as well as developing health issues. Stress has become a huge issue for high school students. Sophie Dalldorf is an 11th grader at Page High School in the IB Program. She said, “I’m constantly worrying about keeping up with my grade to make sure I can get all of my work done. With this worry the stress only gets worse, making it harder for me to concentrate on what’s really important, my academics.” Another student at Page High School is Machara Street, who is a 12th grader. Machara said, “High school is stressful because everything is all on you. No one is holding your hand anymore. No one will let you cry on their shoulder like they did in elementary school or middle school. It’s a taste of the real world and that only puts more pressure on us.” Stress is inevitable however, there are several ways that can help reduce stress among high school students. To reduce stress naturally, student can make sure to stay hydrated and eat healthily. Maintaining a good diet can actually help to reduce the built up stress from school. Another way to reduce stress is by exercising. Exercising releases endorphins and makes you a happier person all together. Taking care of yourself is vital to living a stress-free lifestyle. It has also been proven that staying organized and using visualization can help reduce stress as well. By visualizing you’re doing well in school, your body calms down and turns off your stress response. It is a proven fact that clutter can cause stress, so simply created an organized study area your body will calm down, reducing your stress. Everyone experiences stress in our everyday lives, however by following these simple steps you can live a stress-free life and become successful.
