If you have been on social media at all this year, you may have seen one of the two viral animals of the year so far. Why are there animals that have become popular online starting just recently to the extent that they reached?
The animal that became universally popular online in January was an Adelie penguin which lives on the entire coast of Antarctica and its islands. This penguin became known as the nihilist penguin. This meme originates from a 2007 nature documentary called “Encounters at the End of the World”. This scene gained popularity in January of 2026 with this meme. The clip shows a penguin leaving its group and slowly walking towards a mountain range that is about 45 miles aways instead of to the ocean for food as the narrator speaks about how it is going there to die and that if they brought the penguin back, it would just turn around and continue marching to its doom.
The nihilist penguin became popular because of how it can be used as a metaphor for modern society and capitalism. It shows how people will work all throughout their lives for survival and money but will all end up dying at the end. This existentialism, burnout, and defiance against a society that takes so much from those within it.

At the Ichikawa zoo in Japan, a Japanese Macaque was born in July of 2025 and unfortunately rejected by his mother. Zookeepers raised him for a lot of his early life to make sure that he survived. He was integrated into a full exhibit in January of this year. He was given a stuffed orangutan for comfort early on and they brought it with him when he was moved. There are many instances that have been caught on camera where Punch goes up to other monkeys and is bullied away to which he will hug his stuffed animal for comfort. This led him to rise to online fame in February of 2026.
Many people have fallen in love with this macaque and he has been quite popular online. As of writing this, he has been seen bonding with other monkeys and has been set forward to live a successful life. With these new friends, he spends less time with the orangutan, which is sad, but is the ultimate goal of the zookeepers. Though it may have looked like the other macaques were harming him, these were important for Punch to figure out how to be social like the rest of his species and overall helped him develop.
With these first 2 months of the year having an inspirational and relatable animal, who knows if March will continue the pattern or if it was just a lucky two months.
