With the recent snow interruption to the 2025-26 school year, students have been confined to a remote day with little activity that isn’t on screen. Many people likely didn’t even go out into the snow because of their work and how busy they have been. Here at Page, one teacher decided to change that.

Mr. Westbrook is a math teacher here at Page who teaches Math 1, Math 2, and IB Math: Interpretations and Applications. For his IB class he decided to get students out into the snow to enjoy themselves.
The assignment was quite simple and it was for students to go out into the snow and enjoy themselves by building a snowman, sledding, making a snow angel, or any other winter activity and submit a picture of them doing that. This got his students that are feeling cabin fever to go out and enjoy something that comes to Greensboro rarely. This extra credit opportunity gave his students extra points on their next test. This technique was primarily used to give the students a reason to go outside.

Mr. Westbrook’s idea comes from when he used to live in Massachusetts and snowy winters were regular for him. Moving to the south he realized that we rarely get more than 2 inches of snow in a whole winter. He saw this as an opportunity for his students to experience something that may not happen again for a long time. He also wanted to get his students out because most of them are about to be adults and he wanted them to enjoy one more fun winter before they grow up. He says that he would definitely do this type of assignment again if a good snow happens again in the coming years.

..a solid way to get kids outside and get some fresh air into their lungs. They’ll remember this school activity long after the snow melts.
