Indoor Track Preview

The Page Pirates indoor track team had their first meet last week to kick off the upcoming season. They participated in the Mighty Explorers Challenge in Winston Salem, NC. Head coach Liana Blue said that the Pirates are a young team this year, but performed well for it being their first meet of the season and she was pleased with the start.

The Pirates are a young team this year and are going to be missing a few critical runners from last season. Such runners include Caroline Yarbrough, Jenelle Terry, Drew Lake and his twin brother Troy Lake. Yarbrough is now running at Davidson and performing at a very high level as she won conference runner of the year this past fall during cross country season. Terry is running at WSSU and Drew Lake is running at Catawba, with both succeeding as well.

Coach Blue is hopeful, however, and believes they have enough talent to do well this season. The coaching staff has high hopes for everyone and especially a few key returning runners such as Ian Shanklin, Chrishon Goddard, Dontavius Monroe, Cody King (hopeful freshman), Zack Wynn (jumper), Sydney Deberry (long jump), Lucy Froelich (hurdles), Rebecca Hunt (distance), and Freddie Marx.

The boy’s team is missing football players for now but once they return they hope to get things going and qualify for the county meet where they received 6th place last season. The girls team is young and rebuilding but they hope to hold somewhere around the 3rd place finish they had last season in the county meet.
