Race to the Finish Line

On February 2nd, the Page Pirates indoor track team traveled to Winston-Salem, NC. The Pirates participated in the Guilford County Championships at JDL Fast Track for their last meet of the regular season. This was also a critical meet for the Pirates as it was their last chance to qualify for the state meet.

On the girl’s side, Demetria Goode placed sixth in the 1000 Meter Run. Rebecca Hunt helped out the Pirates as well with a fifth place finish in the 1600 Meter Run and a third place finish in the 3200 Meter Run. Sydney Deberry represented the Pirates in the long jump with a seventh place finish.

The men had an impressive showing as well in this meet. In the 1000 Meter Run, Nathan Gillespie and Ahmed Sinada represented the Pirates with respective fifth and eighth place finishes. In the following event, Freddie Marx placed third and Ian Shanklin placed fourth in the 1600 Meter Run. Marx also got third in the 3200 Meter Run. Javon Leake followed up with a third place finish in the 300 Meter Dash. The men’s 4×200 Meter Relay team had one of the most significant performances of the day though with a second place finish that qualified them for the state meet with a time of 1:34.95. The 4×800 Meter Relay also performed well with another second place finish and a time of 8:34.28. Leake’s day was not done though, as he came into the 55 Meter Dash and finished second place with a time of 6.66. Nathan Hayes and Assad Alston finished fourth and fifth in the Triple Jump for the Pirates.

With the conclusion of this meet, the Pirates will end their regular season. Those who qualified for the state meet will continue to train and work hard in preparation for that meet, which is on Saturday February 13th.
