Page High senior, Charliebeth Burns, is very active in the community when it comes to volunteer work. Charliebeth volunteers at the Guilford County Animal Shelter and participates in kitten fairs at our local PetSmart on Lawndale or on Wendover. When asked what her inspiration behind her volunteer work was, she explained how it was her love for animals and her willingness to help any animal in need. Also, her mother was a big inspiration growing up because volunteer work was her mom’s hobby and so she began taking Charliebeth along with her as Charliebeth got older. Her participation ranges from at least once or twice a week, sometimes more. Almost every weekend she heads to PetSmart to help out however she can. Charliebeth states, “I am an available foster home to kittens 24/7”. She volunteers at PetSmart, Petsense, and the shelter when she has free time. The school year makes it harder, but she never fails to make time. When asked what this has taught her, she says “seeing the condition some animals are in, it makes me thankful for what I have. Some animals are really neglected and no living thing deserves that, I feel very proud of what I do and it makes me feel very good about myself”. Charliebeth doesn’t do this alone though, she works in a group called “Juliet’s House”, and is the youngest member in the crew. All of Charliebeth’s pets are rescued and she even takes in strays that make their way to her house in need of treatment. Charliebeth was asked if she saw a future or career in this and she says “I can see myself making a career out of my love for animals, but if that doesn’t happen, I plan to continue my volunteer work even after high school”. According to her, “The best feeling in the world is finding a home for an animal without one”. Volunteer work, foster homes, and adoptions are always needed. If anyone else is as willing to help as our Page High senior, go to the Guilford County Animal shelter website and click “VOLUNTEERS” to find out how you can be involved. However, the community offers plenty of other service opportunities that are great to get involved in. You too can get involved today just by clicking the link below.
